A beloved Haskell instructor’s passing will be honored with a legacy celebration and story slam

Smokey McKinney passed away on October 12. His legacy is being celebrated by family and friends on October 30. The Legacy celebration will take place at 2:30 at the Carnegie Building and will be followed by an open house reception (4-7 pm) which will include a story slam.

McKinney taught at Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) for over 20 years. In March, McKinney was honored for his dedication to the improvement of student education by renaming Ross Hall room 122 as the Smokey McKinney Writing Center. McKinney will be remembered for his many contributions to the HINU community. The family is asking that any memorials in his name be made to the American Indian College Fund which may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
