Haskell Recognizes Student Scholars

Getting on the President’s or Dean’s list is no easy task, but many students at Haskell continue to reach heights of excellence. The American Indian College Fund (AICF), with the help of several private donors and the Haskell scholarship committee, recognized students for their hard work in reaching high academic achievements. More than $93,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to 112 students at the Haskell Scholarship Award Ceremony on Thursday.

Financial Aid Director,  Carlene Morris said students were recognized for their Fall 2017 grade point average (GPA). “There are a large number of students being recognized today who were on the President’s and Dean’s list last semester.  All those students will receive a certificate and be recognized, but only students who submitted applications for the AICF Tribal College and University (TCU) scholarships will receive a monetary award,” said Morris.

Junior, Carmen Morgan holds up her invitation to the awards ceremony.

The Haskell registrar’s office determines GPA and provides the scholarship committee with the President’s and Dean’s lists.  Students just need to fill out the AICF application online at their website for the TCU scholarship and submit by the deadline to be considered for an award.

“I want students to make it harder for us (the committee) with more applications. I would love to see more students apply,” said Morris. “I’m very proud of our Haskell students. They are pretty awesome.”

Haskell Junior, Carmen Morgan, received an award for the first time for making the President’s list. “It was a lot of work. I had a lot of credit hours and it’s good to see that the hard work paid off. Onward Haskell,” said Morgan.

The Haskell Student of the Year, Sami Milk, was also recognized at the ceremony along with the AICF Student of the year, Marcell Grant. Grant was also recognized at the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) in Rapid City, South Dakota last month. Milk will be addressing her fellow students at the spring Commencement ceremony.

Student, Dee Anderegg waits with her husband to be recognized for her academic achievements.

Another first time award recipient, Dee Anderegg, encourages students to apply for the scholarships. “It’s a reward that students have definitely earned. I really appreciate my professors for inspiring me to learn and my family for supporting me,” said Anderegg.

Coach, Jerry Tuckwin and family were on campus again this semester to award the Shannon Tuckwin Memorial scholarship as well as the Haskell Alumni Association of Oklahoma.  Other donor awards in addition to the AICF included the Debbie Schwartz Scholarship, Haskell Foundation Scholarship, Haskell Lawrence Chapter Alumni Association Scholarship, Jo Grass Memorial Scholarship, and the Stutzke Foundation Scholarship.

Refreshments were served following the ceremony.
